Ray Powell Mullins, lovingly known by all who knew him as “Moon,” passed away on July 4, 2026. He was born on February 25, 1938, in Laredo, West Virginia, to Willie Wandall Mullins and Dorothy Dale Mullins.

Moon’s life was defined by grit, talent, and an adventurous spirit. In 1962, he left West Virginia and traveled to San Francisco to pursue his passion for softball, playing on B‑class farm teams. A year later, in 1963, he made his home in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he began working at Duvall Potash. He later retired from Amax Potash in the 1970s.

Athletics were woven into the fabric of Moon’s life. He was an avid basketball, softball, and golf player, known for his competitive spirit and natural skill. Over the course of his lifetime, Moon achieved eight holes‑in‑one on the golf course. In 2002, his dedication to softball was honored with his induction into the New Mexico Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Hall of Fame, a recognition he cherished deeply.

Moon was also known for his unmistakable personality — a man who never hesitated to give advice, whether you asked for it or not, and who carried a stubborn streak that those closest to him learned to love. His guidance, his opinions, and his determination were part of what made him unforgettable.

After many years in Carlsbad, Moon moved to Lubbock, Texas, with his longtime partner, Linda Hicks, where they built a life filled with companionship and love.

Moon is survived by his partner Linda Hicks, his daughter Tammy Johnson, Tammy’s partner Michael Ratliff, Linda’s daughter Tracy Newton, his brother Terry Mullins, many grandchildren, and many great‑grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Claudette French, his brother Billy Mullins, and his daughter Pamela Mullins.

Moon lived a life of determination, humor, and heart. His stories, his laughter, his advice, and even his stubbornness will continue to live on in all who loved him.

Celebration of life service will be held at a later date in Carlsbad, New Mexico, please continue to check back for updated service information. Cremation services are under the direction of House of Angels Funeral Home, Lubbock, Texas.
