IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Johnny Odell
Scoggins
June 29, 1930 – January 28, 2024
Johnny Odell Scoggins came into this world on June 29, 1930, according to his mother it was a hot and dry day in Hall County, TX not the optimal time to birth a child!
He spent his young years living and working during the "Great Depression" which was described as the dust bowl days. He often talked about getting water and wetting blankets for his mother to hang over the windows and the doors of the house so the sand would not come in when a windstorm would come up. He said, "Most of the time it was just so they could breathe through the dusty air." He lived and worked on the farm in Hall County until the whole family moved to Cochran County, TX in 1948. He never finished high school because he had to go to work, but later he became an avid reader of the Word of God and scores of inspirational books and teachings.
He met the love of his life Edna Mae Frances Scoggins at church in Morton, TX, soon after that wonderful day he was drafted into the United States Army. They wanted to get married before he left for basic training, but he was under the age of 21. He had to get his parents to give permission on the marriage license at the county to be legally allowed to be married, He was old enough to get drafted! But not old enough to get married. He spent his military service at Ft. Bliss near El Paso, TX which Frances called the "sand trap".
Following his service in the military he and Frances returned to Morton, TX where they farmed, and went to church where he served as a deacon, teacher, and Sunday School coordinator for many years. They also raised three lovely children: Rita, Robert, and Gary.
He farmed in Cochran County until he reluctantly retired at the age of 65. Soon after retirement he and Frances relocated to Lubbock, TX. It was there that he flourished in his later years.
Johnny and Frances both served as Volunteers at the Bridge of Lubbock for many years. Frances was the clothes closet coordinator and Johnny did the heavy lifting. They both served at Cathedral of Praise as leaders, prayer partners and kids club volunteers. They spent hours and hours of service to at-risk families and especially kids. Later they would continue serving at First Assembly of God in Lubbock, TX.
In his spare time, he started a lawn care service because he needed to be outside and was getting bored. When asked who his clients were, he would say, "the old ladies in the neighborhood." He operated that business for 25 years. He decided to retire from that endeavor at the age of 91.
Johnny loved the outdoors…especially hunting and fishing. More than the outdoors he loved Jesus! His goal in life was to see as many people as he could come to know the friend and Savior that Christ was to him.
Johnny Odell Scoggins left this life to eternal life on Sunday, January 28, 2024.
He is survived by his daughter, Rita and son-in-law, Dan Fegan of Vancouver, WA; son, Robert Scoggins of Lubbock, TX; son, Gary Scoggins, and daughter-in-law, Teresa of Lubbock, TX; grandsons, Landon Scoggins, and Lathan Scoggins, both of Pagosa Springs, CO; brother, Howard Scoggins, and sister-in-law, Thelma Jo of Morton, TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, DJ and Jolynn Peters of Lubbock, TX; Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Twila and Carroll Patterson of Lubbock, TX; sister-in-law, Andrea Townsend of Springs, TX; sister-in-law, Phyllis Peters of Lubbock, TX; and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, family and friends.
