Ann Howland

October 25, 1942 — May 24, 2026

Clovis, NM

Ann Howland, 83, went home to be with the Lord on May 24, 2026 after an extended, bravely fought battle from a stroke. Ann was born to parents Edna and Melvin Gilbert on October 25, 1942 in Denton, Texas. Her father worked for the Austin Road Company building airstrips during World War II. They eventually moved to Clovis, NM in 1945 to farm and be near Edna’s family, The Pippins.

Ann graduated from Clovis High School in 1960 and married Ray Brumfield, a week after graduation in June, 1960. They had two daughters together. She was active in 4-H, coaching sports, and loved the outdoors. She worked as a nurse’s assistant and then went to nursing college in Amarillo. She worked a variety of jobs and was a dedicated nurse for over 50 years. She was a great nurse to whom her whole family often turned to. She helped care for both of her parents in their last days. Although she lived much of her life in Texas, she returned to the family home in New Mexico in 2017 after she finally retired from nursing. On May 8, 2017 Ann married Dan Howland of Garland, Texas. Ann and Dan enjoyed going to the gun range and had a lot of fun together. They both loved to cook, can, and garden.

She was very active in serving the Lord Jesus. Ann was a great cook, particularly baking cakes and cookies. She helped cook for the youth and bereavement meals, along with other volunteer work for her church, Emmanuel Baptist, in Portales. She loved her family, her animals, and her dogs. Traveling was something she enjoyed and had a lot of good, memorable trips. Her family loved her as did her friends. Ann will be very missed.

Ann is survived by her husband, Dan Howland, who devotedly cared for her after her stroke. Along with her daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Young of Amarillo, Texas, and Krista (Vernon) Jones of Portales, NM. She is survived by grandchildren Greyson and Ashton Young, Karisa (Chris Reiders) Jones, Justin (Celeste) Jones, Robin (Nati) Rangel, as well as her beloved great-granddaughters Lily and Scarlett Rangel. She is also survived by her loving sister, Janet (Brad) Daniels of Gold Canyon, AZ. She also leaves behind in loving memory nephews, Chris (Sarah) Daniel’s, Todd (Darcie) Lester, and niece Melissa Moore, as well as many great nieces and nephews, and several cousins. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Edna Gilbert, and siblings, Lynn Poole, Jim Gilbert, and Lewis Gilbert.

Celebration of life will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 524 N Globe Ave, Portales, NM 88130 on Friday, June 5, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. Cremation services are under the direction of House of Angels Funeral Home, Lubbock.
